Goodwin Proctor Renews At The Plaza

Goodwin Procter LLP, an American Lawyer magazine “Am Law 50” firm, has renewed its lease for nearly 20,000 square feet of office space at The Plaza, the Irvine Company’s premier business address in the heart of San Diego’s technology corridor.

After considering other spaces in the area, Goodwin renewed at The Plaza’s Pacifica Tower, a prestigious 18-story Class A office building in La Jolla-University Towne Centre. Terms of the lease were not disclosed.

The Plaza offers close proximity to clients for Goodwin, an international full-service firm whose San Diego office specializes in technology and life sciences.

“The Plaza is a world-class office setting at the center of San Diego’s technology industry,” said David E. Kleinfeld, chair of Goodwin Procter’s San Diego office. “It’s an ideal location for a world-class firm such as Goodwin Procter, providing top-quality service to the world’s leading companies from its offices in China and London as well as locations throughout the United States.”

Boston-based Goodwin’s San Diego office opened in 2007 and includes 15 attorneys whose areas of focus include public and private financings, acquisitions, strategic partnerships, technology licenses and intellectual property litigation.

Goodwin’s San Diego office clients include Qualcomm Inc., SAIC Inc., HTC Corp., Kyocera Corp. and other technology, biotechnology, material sciences and telecommunications companies.

The Plaza is a six-building business center in a 17-acre, park-like setting near the University of California, San Diego, and the tech hubs of Torrey Pines, Sorrento Valley and Sorrento Mesa. San Diego International Airport and Downtown are about 15 minutes away.

Goodwin and other customers at The Plaza have access to a conference center, fitness center, auto detailing, banking and three restaurants onsite. Employees are within walking distance to shopping, dining and entertainment at Westfield UTC shopping center.

“The Plaza’s premier quality and prime location made business sense for Goodwin Procter,” said John Turner, San Diego regional vice president of the Irvine Company Office Properties. “And the site offers the best of both worlds with restaurants and other amenities just steps away.”

The Irvine Company acquired The Plaza in 2007 as part of a long-term commitment to San Diego. The company’s San Diego portfolio includes six premier Downtown office buildings, six apartment communities and office and campus space in Del Mar Heights, Sorrento Mesa, Mission Valley and La Jolla-UTC.

The Plaza was part of a recent large-scale reinvestment in the company’s La Jolla-UTC properties that included comprehensive upgrades to main lobbies, extensive improvements to exteriors and select customer floors as well as fresh landscaping.

The high level of customer service at The Plaza, coupled with The Irvine Company’s commitment to long-term ownership and its ease in working with on a new lease, helped clinch Goodwin’s decision to renew.
