Island Hotel Newport Beach Appoints Veteran Hotelier Dieter Hissin As New General Manager

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Jan. 13, 2014 – Island Hotel Newport Beach® today announced the appointment of long-time Orange County hospitality executive Dieter Hissin to general manager. An esteemed personality in the Newport Beach community, Hissin brings more than 30 years of experience to the Five-Diamond, coastal luxury property, where he will lead day-to-day operations and an extensive team of skilled professionals at Orange County’s premier business hotel.

With a new signature restaurant, lounge and vibrant outdoor gathering space set to debut later this year, Hissin will be instrumental in the continued development of Island Hotel’s innovative reinvestment project. In 2013, the hotel introduced 23,000 square feet of reinvigorated meeting and event space, including the largest ballroom in Newport Beach, an intimate al fresco wedding venue and the popular Island Club lounge to discerning guests and business travelers from near and far.

“As we prepare to unveil the newest social and culinary destination at the heart of Newport Center – a place to see and be seen by global jetsetters and local trendsetters – Dieter’s extensive hospitality and food and beverage background will be essential,” said Ralph Grippo, president of Irvine Company Resort Properties. “The lasting impact he has made on the local community over the past two decades is a testament to his amiable personality and eloquent leadership style, and we are thrilled to welcome him to our team during this exciting time.”

Hissin, a seventh generation hotelier, grew up in the small town of Friesenheim, Germany where his passion for the culinary and hospitality industry began at an early age. At just 10 years old, he worked under the guidance of his father in the kitchen of Gasthof Krone, his family’s quaint hotel in the Black Forest region of Southern Germany. Passed down from generation to generation since its inception in the mid-1800s, the hotel served as a guide for Hissin’s subsequent hospitality career, with his parents and grandparents as enduring mentors.

A discerning palate and keen culinary expertise led Hissin to embark on a three-year apprenticeship as chef at the Michelin-starred Colombi Hotel in Freiburg, Germany at the age of 17. Throughout his career, his love for fine wines and exquisite cuisine followed suit, leading him to develop established local events such as the annual Newport Beach Wine Festival.

Prior to joining Island Hotel, Hissin served as general manager at Balboa Bay Resort. During his 18-year tenure with the Newport Beach resort, he held roles as executive assistant manager, director of food and beverage and restaurant manager. He moved to California in 1992 when he accepted the position of restaurant manager for The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel, which led him to a brief overseas relocation to open The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong. Previously, he held management and culinary roles at Hotel Gravenbruch Kempinski in Frankfurt, Germany and the Michelin-starred Zähringer Burg restaurant in Frieburg, Germany.

Hissin earned his bachelor of arts degree in hotel economics from the Hotel Management School in Heidelberg, Germany after serving a mandatory 15-month tour as a paratrooper in the German Airborne division. He resides in Laguna Niguel with his wife and six-year-old son Lucas.
