Modern Romance Turns 21

The womenswear boutique celebrates 21 years at Fashion Island with special in-store promotions and giveaways August 15-16

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., August 2015 – When Modern Romance opened its doors in 1994, it was one of the first locally-owned contemporary women’s apparel shops at Fashion Island.

Back then, owner Theresa Johnson stocked her boutique with clothing and accessories from brands like Alexander Brown, Marika Nakk and TT Mar – pieces that were vintage-inspired, with floral prints and a soft, feminine feel. Now, the boutique is set to celebrate 21 years at Fashion Island with the launch of its new line Stevie Sister, a capsule collection of romantic bohemian women’s apparel.

“It just goes to show everything comes full circle,” said Johnson. “Modern Romance has always been about paying tribute to free-spirited, ultra-feminine fashion.”

Over the years, Modern Romance has carried hundreds of premium California-casual brands from Splendid to Michael Stars. Today, shoppers can still find plenty of updated looks that still embrace the bohemian coastal Orange County lifestyle, from Jen’s Pirate Booty and Flynn Skye to Novella Royale and For Love and Lemons.

“In this day and age, 21 years is a remarkable achievement in the business and retail world,” said Easther Liu, Chief Marketing Officer of Irvine Company Retail Properties. “We’re proud to continue supporting such a wonderful and locally-owned boutique that celebrates the best in Southern California coastal style.”

To fete its 21st birthday, Modern Romance will be offering special in-store promotions and giveaways on Aug. 15 and Aug. 16, when customers will be able to receive 21 percent off one item in the store.

“We’ve watched our customers grow up with the store through the years, from the moms who brought in their daughters, to the daughters who still shop here,” said Johnson. “It’s been a privilege.”
