Southern California’s Longest-Running Summer Concert Series Returns to Fashion Island

Southern California’s longest-running summer concert series returns to Fashion Island on Wednesday, July 11 as this favorite outdoor venue kicks off its Annual Summer Concert Series. The free concerts are held in Bloomingdale’s Courtyard every Wednesday at 7 p.m. for six weeks.

Fashion Island’s Summer Concert Series gets underway on Wednesday, July 11 with Micky Dolenz of The Monkees. Dolenz gained celebrity in the 1960s and 70s when he was one of four actors chosen out of 400 applicants to star in The Monkees, a TV show about a rock n’ roll band that had high ratings for two seasons. The Monkees achieved greater success as recording artists, with four albums reaching number one on the charts and producing three consecutive number one singles, including “Clarksville,” “I’m a Believer” and “Daydream Believer.”

The Summer Concert Series continues on Wednesday, July 18 with The Fab Four, a Beatles tribute band. Based in Southern California, The Fab Four is renowned for its attention to detail and note-for-note live renditions of Beatles’ songs. The group has performed the Beatles’ classic hits such as “Can’t Buy Me Love” and “A Hard Day’s Night” throughout the world, including Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, Mexico and Brazil.

On Wednesday, July 25, Nelson – The Ricky Nelson Remembered Tour will entertain the audience. Matthew and Gunnar Nelson, twin brothers whose early 1990’s debut album, “After the Rain,” produced three Top 10 singles, are sons of the late Rick Nelson. The Nelsons will perform their father’s hits as well as their own, including “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love & Affection,” and “After the Rain.”

On Wednesday, August 1, Berlin featuring Terri Nunn will take the stage at Fashion Island. Berlin was one of the most popular New Wave techno-pop bands in the 1980s. Nunn will perform Berlin hits including “The Metro,” “No More Words,” and “Take My Breath Away,” the love theme from the 1986 Tom Cruise movie, “Top Gun.”

Johnny Rivers will continue the Concert Series on Wednesday, August 8. In the 1960s, Rivers was a hitmaker whose signature style encompassed the best of blues, rock, soul and folk. After releasing several hit songs and albums, including “Secret Agent Man” and “Memphis,” Rivers founded his own record label. He soon signed The Fifth Dimension, whose hit “Up, Up and Away” won Rivers two Grammys, for Record and Song of the Year.

As has become tradition, Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band will close out the Fashion Island Summer Concert Series on Wednesday, August 15. Grammy winner Poncho Sanchez has become a favorite of concert goers for his unique blend of Latin jazz. Sanchez has been performing and recording for three decades and plays the guitar, flute, drums, timbales, and the congas, which have become his signature instrument. He will perform hits including “Yumbambe” and “Papa Gato.”

This year’s Summer Concert Series is being produced by Stonebridge Productions and presented by Acura. Fashion Island restaurants including California Pizza Kitchen, Red Rock Chili Co. and Pasta Bravo will host food booths in Bloomingdale’s Courtyard for convenient dining.

General seating is complimentary and opens to the public on a first-come, first-served basis at 5 p.m.; there is no reserved seating before 5 p.m. Preferred seating, available for $20, will go on sale through the Fashion Island Concierge in early June. Preferred ticket holders will have access to a no-host martini and wine bar, with proceeds from the bar benefiting Project Independence, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping developmentally disabled adults in Orange County live and work independently.

Fashion Island’s Concert Series first debuted in 1967 and draws thousands to each show. To purchase tickets or for more information on the Summer Concert Series, call the Fashion Island Concierge at (949) 721-2000.
