Special delivery: Amazon brings signature speed to University Center with a pick-up point in 2018

Retail hub next to UCI is ever-vibrant with new Amazon

IRVINE, Calif. (Oct. 16, 2017) — Irvine Company announced today that e-commerce titan Amazon is planning to open one of its pick-up points next year in University Center, adding convenience for UC Irvine students who live in dorms and other nearby housing where receiving packages is often challenging.

“We’re honing up our tailored retail approach to University Center’s collegiate community,” said Easther Liu, chief marketing officer, Irvine Company Retail Properties.  “The storefront also increases Amazon’s visibility among UC Irvine’s vital demographic.”

The Amazon news follows the arrival of a scaled-down Target, which opened one of its campus-specific versions this past summer—about a sixth the size of a typical Target. Meanwhile, Amazon’s brick-and-mortar push to the campus crowd premiered last year with pick-up points opening at UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara as well as University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Purdue University.

The 3,150-square-foot Amazon location will offer two different types of services: a counter pick-up and a self-service locker accessed by a security code. And of course, students who are Amazon Prime or Amazon Student Prime subscribers get the extra benefit of faster delivery for certain items when placing orders through Amazon’s online store. Some items are available for free pickup within a day rather than the usual two-day delivery.

Amazon at University Center will be at 4139 Campus Drive, Suite A150, in Irvine.
