Stephen Friedlander Named General Manager of Pelican Hill Golf Club

Stephen Friedlander, one of the golf industry’s most respected leaders, has been named general manager of Pelican Hill Golf Club®, announced The Irvine Company Resort Properties.

In this role, Friedlander will oversee one of Southern California’s premier golf clubs which is preparing to re-open in fall 2007 with 36-holes of Tom Fazio-designed golf and an array of ultra-luxurious facilities and amenities. Pelican Hill Golf Club will be an anchor and the first component of an extraordinary destination resort, The Resort at Pelican Hill™, opening in fall 2008.

Friedlander, 54, comes to Pelican Hill Golf Club from the Kohler Co. in Kohler, Wis., one of the nation’s preeminent operators of luxury golf resorts, where he served as general manager and group director of golf. He was responsible for all aspects of the company’s acclaimed golf properties including Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run in Wisconsin and The Duke’s in St. Andrews, Scotland. Under Friedlander’s leadership, Whistling Straits hosted the 2004 PGA Championship and will host the tournament again in 2010 and 2015, as well as the Ryder Cup in 2020. This year, it was the site of the 2007 U.S. Senior Open. The Duke’s is one of the finest championship courses
in the British Isles.

Previously, he served as director of golf at Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami, which was part of the PGA tour during his tenure, and as director of golf at Ventana Canyon Golf & Racquet Club in Tuscon.

Pelican Hill Golf Club will feature a clubhouse built on a hillside with sweeping panoramas, a signature restaurant serving upscale California cuisine with al fresco terrace dining, a well-appointed practice facility and a state-of-the-art golf academy. Two of the nation’s most highly rated public courses, Pelican Hill Ocean North and Pelican Hill Ocean South, were originally designed here in the early 1990s by Fazio and he returned, as he explained, to “re-perfect” all 36 holes in a location that is “one of the most spectacular in golf.” Fazio is overseeing a combination of physical and functional enhancements to the aesthetics, turf quality and playing conditions of the courses.

“With the stunning setting, luxurious clubhouse, excellent practice facility and two courses that Tom Fazio, one of golf’s great designers, has returned to re-perfect, Pelican Hill will truly be one of the premier golf destinations in the world,”said Friedlander.

Being created on a serene, 504-acre setting in Newport Coast® by The Irvine Company, The Resort at Pelican Hill is a masterpiece in the making that promises to set a new paradigm in resort exclusivity, style and guest experience. It will combine comfortably elegant California style with the principles of Italy’s most renowned Renaissance architect, Andrea Palladio, who emphasized simple grace and harmony with nature.

Among the resort’s facilities and amenities will be: 204 bungalow rooms and suites; 128 villas; a dramatic, circular pool with an amphitheater of terraced decks inspired by Rome’s Coliseum; world-class dining options from exquisitely prepared Italian cuisine to upscale California cuisine; a 20,000-sq-ft. spa offering therapies and treatments from around the world; function space, including a facility with a separate arrival area; and a stunning Italian-style wedding chapel.

Easily accessible, The Resort at Pelican Hill is located just 10 minutes from Orange County’s John Wayne Airport, 45 minutes from LAX, and adjacent to the famed shopping, dining and beaches of the chic seaside communities of Newport Beach and Laguna Beach.
