Looking for a great martial arts class? Want to find people who share your passion for Scrabble or a good book? How about browsing the Internet while lounging by the resort pool? It’s all happening at The Club in the award-winning Irvine village of Woodbury.
“We’re trying to offer something for everyone at The Club, with an assortment of many different groups and activities,” said Kevin Chudy, General Manager of the Woodbury Community Association, whose responsibilities include overseeing all the state-of-the-art recreational and social facilities of The Club.
Amber and Jason Swedenborg, who moved to Woodbury over a year ago, are enjoying the wide variety of activities available at The Club and the proximity of Woodbury.
“It’s very convenient to just walk over to The Club for class or ride our bikes to the Woodbury Town Center,” said Amber Swedenborg, an elementary school teacher in the City of Orange. “That’s the ideal thing about Woodbury: everything’s within easy reach.”
According to Saghir Aslam, who moved from Westminster to Woodbury nearly two years ago with his wife, Bushra, “Woodbury is the perfect village, so well planned and maintained and with many incredible facilities and activities. We love walking or jogging around the community and the adjacent open space trails. We also take our grandchildren to the pool and water-play park at The Club, and we’ve brought them to several of The Club’s events. There’s nothing else quite like the village of Woodbury.”
For the Aslams, who run an educational and welfare trust dedicated to helping people in need, being involved in their community is important, too. Saghir Aslam is a member of the Woodbury Social Committee, which helps to plan Woodbury’s frequent events and seasonal celebrations.
“I want to be a part of the community and help make things happen,” Aslam said. “We’ve made friends with many of our neighbors and are talking about having gatherings at the park or other events to get to know each other better.”
Amy Hellewell, who teaches elementary school in Irvine, is a member of the Crop Club (scrapbooking), Parent ‘n Me and the Woodbury Social Committee. She moved to Woodbury almost two years ago with her husband, Brian.
“We chose Woodbury for our first home purchase for a number of reasons,” said Hellewell, whose job-share teaching schedule gives her plenty of time with their young daughter. “It’s a freeway-close community, and we have all these parks, pools and an elementary school within walking distance of home. For me, the Parent ‘n Me Club is ideal. We meet with our children at The Club once a week for activities like playing in the park and walking around the gardens.”
Among the other clubs and activities currently available at The Club are tennis lessons, swimming lessons, martial arts, cycling, tumbling and gymnastics, adult crafts programs, and more.
The Club is just one element of The Commons, the social and recreational heart of Woodbury. It features a lighted full-sized basketball court, four lighted tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, sunny courtyards and other social seating areas, an outdoor fireplace, and the Great Lawn for open play and special outdoor events. Two multi-purpose buildings offer areas for private parties, including one with full kitchen facilities.
The Club at The Commons also features a Junior Olympic-sized competition swimming pool with stadium-style design and a grass seating area for spectators, a resort pool and spa enhanced by cabanas and barbecues, and a lagoon pool accessed by a “beach” entry that connects with a children’s water garden and wading pool.
Also located within The Commons is the 10-acre Woodbury Community Park (a City of Irvine public park) and the state-of-the-art Woodbury Elementary School (part of the renowned Irvine Unified School District).
Elsewhere in Woodbury, residents will benefit from numerous parks, squares and gardens, a number of which already are open. Nestled within the various residential districts, these neighborhood recreation areas encompass pools, spas, picnic areas with barbecues, half basketball courts, play lawns, and children’s climbing structures.
Woodbury Town Center is another thriving area within the village of Woodbury, where a wide range of stores, restaurants and services await. Close-to-home shopping, dining and entertainment on a larger scale is available at Irvine Spectrum Center® and The Market Place.
