Woodbury Elementary School Now Open

Homeshoppers will be pleased to learn that the eagerly anticipated Woodbury Elementary School opened its doors to students. The newest state-of-the-art educational facility in the Irvine Unified School District serves students from the nationally recognized village of Woodbury in Irvine, where a wide range of new homes are now available for sale.

The school is situated along the western edge of The Commons, Woodbury¡¦s 30-acre resort-style social and recreational heart. From this convenient, ¡§near it all¡¨ locale, Woodbury children are able to walk or ride their bikes to school via the pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly network of trails that link all the neighborhoods of Woodbury to various village amenities.

¡§As we begin the New Year, it¡¦s evident that Woodbury is continuing to mature, making this an exciting time at this incredible village,¡¨ said Suzanne Maddalon, senior director of marketing and research for Irvine Community Development Company LLC, an affiliate of The Irvine Company LLC. ¡§The pools and play areas at The Club are open, residents are enjoying the outstanding variety of shops, restaurants and stores at Woodbury Town Center, and a new school has opened. It¡¦s a great time to visit Woodbury and all the new homes that are available.¡¨

Woodbury Elementary is a year-round, single-track school offering K-6 instruction. The school accommodates 700 students and utilizes the latest in technology, including a computer lab with 36 computers for direct instruction and an additional 30 or more computers in each classroom wing for student use throughout the day.

¡§Our teachers and staff are excited for what this new year brings to this state-of-the-art facility situated right in the heart of Woodbury,¡¨ said Lauren Sipelis, one of two principals for the new school. ¡§The school¡¦s student-centered approach covers all areas of learning. Not only do our students have the latest technology at their fingertips, but they have opportunities to participate in musical theater and other arts programs along with the academic curriculum.¡¨

Also part of the new school campus is a library/media center, separate kindergarten area, multipurpose area, high-tech stage, food service area, lunch shelter, playfields, and hardcourts. In addition to the school¡¦s strong academic programs, students benefit from instruction in music, art, PE, and science from specialists in these fields.

Noted Tammera Parham, the school¡¦s other principal: ¡§At Woodbury Elementary, we value the whole child. Complementing our outstanding classroom curriculum, we focus on the core values required to be successful in life: Compassion, Cooperation, Initiative, Integrity, Perseverance, Positive Mental Attitude, and Respect.¡¨

The student-centered design for Woodbury Elementary School takes maximum advantage of its site. ¡§When you take a look at the way the classrooms are set up and the alignment of the campus, it¡¦s all there to enhance student learning,¡¨ Parham said. ¡§The library/media center is the hub of the entire school, where children really have the opportunity to apply knowledge and advance their learning. The way fine arts is connected with the multipurpose room and the layout of fields for physical education reflects just how carefully everything has been thought out to provide an optimal educational environment.¡¨

¡§An outstanding education is an important component of village life at Woodbury. IUSD students continue to score among the highest API scores in the county and the state; these scores are a great reflection of IUSD¡¦s teachers and students,¡¨ said Maddalon.

In addition to Woodbury¡¦s excellent places to learn, the village offers a wealth of places to play, discover and just relax. Central to the Woodbury lifestyle is The Club, the residents-only, resort-inspired facility that is the centerpiece for village recreation and socializing.

The Club features a Junior Olympic-sized competition pool that is home to the Woodbury Waves swim team, a resort pool and spa with cabanas and barbecues, and a lagoon pool accessed via a ¡§beach entry¡¨ with a children¡¦s water garden and wading pool. Club facilities also include four lighted tennis courts, a lighted basketball court with gated entry, a sand volleyball court, sunny courtyards and other social seating areas, an outdoor fireplace, a Great Lawn ideal for outdoor events, and two multi-purpose buildings available for private parties.

Adjacent to The Club is the Woodbury Community Park, offering a soccer field, two baseball diamonds, two lighted full-sized basketball courts, a tot lot, picnic tables and play areas, and a community center building staffed by City of Irvine personnel.
