Irvine Co. leads state with first LEED Dynamic Plaque that displays a building’s ongoing sustainability performance
Symphony Tower in San Diego receives new digital dashboard that displays environmental performance
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (May 2, 2016) — Irvine Company’s Symphony Tower in downtown San Diego recently became California’s first office building to qualify for a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Dynamic Plaque as part of its recertification.
The plaque monitors a building’s environmental performance in five categories: energy, water, waste, transportation and human experience—and provides a continually updated score.
“Irvine Company is demonstrating tremendous leadership in the green building industry by becoming the first building in California to maintain LEED certification through this platform, signifying its commitment to creating a healthier space for its occupants,” said Rick Fedrizzi, CEO and founding chair of U.S. Green Building Council.
Symphony Tower received the new plaque after becoming the first building in California recertified using criteria of the LEED Dynamic Plaque. The U.S. Green Building Council also upgraded the premier office tower’s certification from silver to gold.
For decades, Irvine Company has stood at the forefront of what is now called green design, construction and operation. Today Irvine Company is California’s largest LEED office portfolio owner with 64 certified buildings, totaling more than 18 million square feet.
“The LEED Dynamic Plaque introduces an ongoing performance element to the LEED certification process and holds us accountable throughout the year,” says Christopher Popma, vice president of operations for Irvine Company Office Properties. “We always have been a pioneer in sustainable development and our goal is to provide environmentally healthy, high performance workplace communities, where our customers and their employees can flourish.”
The LEED rating system is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. Its new Dynamic Plaque is designed to enable building owners to see trends, and to improve building operations to save money, resources and make building occupants more comfortable.
“It will serve as an outward display of the company’s commitment to the green building movement, and will inspire others to acknowledge that even small changes in behavior can have a significant and meaningful impact,” USGBC’s Fedrizzi said.
Irvine Company intends to use the new LEED Dynamic Plaque platform in all of its LEED-certified office buildings in the coming years.
