Irvine Company has most 2015 ENERGY STAR® certified office buildings in the U.S.

Company also ranks second in terms of total square footage certified, according to company analysis

IRVINE, Calif. (May 18, 2016) – Irvine Company Office Properties, an ENERGY STAR Partner, owns and operates the largest number of energy-efficient, 2015 ENERGY STAR certified office buildings in the nation, according to a company analysis of public data.

Administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the ENERGY STAR program certified 102 Irvine Company buildings last year for superior energy efficiency, the most in the nation. The company’s 23.4 million square feet of certified office space also ranked second nationally in terms of total certified square footage, analysis of data published at energystar.gov found.

“We have been dedicated to operating the most efficient buildings possible as part of our commitment to environmental stewardship,” said Rich Bluth, Irvine Company’s vice president of Energy Management. “ENERGY STAR certification validates that our considerable efforts are paying off.”

“We applaud the achievements of the Irvine Company in certifying more than 100 buildings as ENERGY STAR last year,” said Jean Lupinacci, Chief of the ENERGY STAR Commercial & Industrial Buildings Branch. “The energy used by commercial buildings is responsible for almost 20 percent of our nation’s greenhouse gas emissions, so they’re not only saving money, they’re helping preserve a healthy planet for future generations.”

Last year, the company made national headlines for being the first real estate company to create a fleet of hybrid-electric buildings® with Advanced Microgrid Systems that will be powered by state-of-the-art Tesla Energy.

Collectively, the company’s 102 ENERGY STAR buildings achieved an average ENERGY STAR score of 86. The numerical score represents a building’s percentile ranking among similar buildings nationwide; a building that scores a 75 or higher on the EPA’s 1 – 100 scale may be eligible for ENERGY STAR certification. On average, ENERGY STAR certified buildings use 35% less energy and generate 35% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than their peers, making them an important part of the sustainability solution.

200 Spectrum Center, the company’s new 21-story vertical campus in the heart of Irvine Spectrum, was one of just four new buildings in the U.S. to earn the “Designed to Earn the ENERGY STAR” recognition in 2015 for new construction. This is one of the reasons the new high-rise building has become a highly sought-after address in the region.

Last year, Irvine Company’s One La Jolla Center, a 15-story Class A office building in San Diego’s University Towne Centre, was the only office project in California to earn the same distinction for new construction.
